Word document to carousel: what survives the conversion

A Word document to carousel: your browser turns the .docx into plain text before upload. What is kept, what is dropped, the limits, and a brief to paste.

Updated 2026-10-21

In short

A Word document to carousel takes two steps: your browser turns the .docx into plain text, and only that text reaches carouselgen's server. Words, line breaks and tabs survive. Table grids, pictures, heading styles, list numbers and link addresses do not. A .docx can be 10 MB, with up to 1 MB of text inside it.

What happens to a Word document on its way to a carousel?

  1. 1

    Your browser opens the .docx

When you attach the file, the page loads a converter (mammoth) and asks it for the raw text of the document. The code comment in carouselgen says why: the model does not read .docx, so the file goes up as its text.

  2. 2

The text is trimmed and checked

A document with no text in it is refused as empty. A document whose text is over 1 MB is refused as too long.

  3. 3

A text file goes up under the Word file's name

The upload is a plain-text file with your file's name. The server receives that text; its code states that no Word archive is ever unpacked there.

  4. 4

The designer reads it like any other attachment

It is labelled with its attachment number and name, so your brief can say "use the attached update.docx".

What does the conversion keep and drop?

The converter's own README says its raw-text mode "will ignore all formatting in the document. Each paragraph is followed by two newlines." To see what that means, we ran the same function (mammoth 1.13.0, the version carouselgen installs) on small test files in October 2026.

In the Word fileWhat reaches the designer
ParagraphsKept, each followed by a blank line.
Headings, bold, italicsThe words are kept; the styling is gone, so a heading reads like any other line.
Bullets and numbered listsThe item text is kept. The bullet or number that Word draws is not in the text and is dropped (tested).
TablesEach cell's text becomes its own paragraph, in reading order. The grid is gone: a table with the cells Region, Revenue, North and 42 came out as four separate lines (tested).
Pictures and charts pasted as picturesNothing, not even the picture's alt text (tested).
Tracked changesText inside a tracked insertion came through; text inside a tracked deletion did not, so it reads as if all changes were accepted (tested with one of each).
FootnotesDropped (tested).
HyperlinksThe linked words are kept; the web address is not (tested).
CommentsNot tested here. The converter's README says comments are ignored by default.
Headers, footers, text boxes, equationsNot tested, so I make no claim.
Because headings lose their styling, the designer cannot tell a heading from a sentence. Put the structure into your brief: say which line is the main point, or number the sections you want as slides.

What should I do about tables, charts and pictures?

  • A table that matters: write its key values into the brief, or attach a PDF copy of the document instead, which the model reads as text and page images (see PDF to LinkedIn carousel).
  • A picture or logo you want on a slide: attach it as its own image file and name the slide. See adding photos to a carousel.
  • Tracked changes: accept or reject them in Word first if you are unsure which wording you want. Only the accepted-looking text reaches the designer.
  • A footnote or link address you need: say it in the brief.

How big can a Word file be?

LimitValueWhat you see when you break it
The .docx file10 MB"Over 10 MB, the most for this kind of file."
The text inside one file1 MB"Too much text: about 200,000 characters at most across all files."
All text and Word files togetherAbout 200,000 charactersThe same message, on the file that goes over.
Files on one carousel10 files, 20 MB togetherA message on the file that goes over.
Other Word formatsOnly .docx is accepted"We can't read this kind of file. Use PDF, Word (.docx), text or an image."

The limits come from carouselgen's source code (lib/deck/source-limits.ts) and the messages from its copy file. If you have an older .doc file, open it in Word and save it as .docx, or save a PDF.

A worked example: a Word update with one table

This is an example, not a real file. Say you have a three-page customer update called update.docx: an intro, a section titled "What changed", a small table of three measures, and a closing note. The table will arrive as loose lines, so the brief repeats its values. Replace the brackets with your own.

"A carousel for our customers from the attached update.docx. Seven slides. Open with the one change in the section 'What changed' that matters most to them, as a plain sentence. Then one slide for each of these three measures with its value exactly as written: [measure 1: value], [measure 2: value], [measure 3: value]. Then a slide on what we do next, taken from the closing note. The last slide asks one question about what they would like to see next."

  1. Cover: the change that matters most.
  2. Slides 2 to 4: one measure each, the value large.
  3. Slide 5: what changed, in two lines.
  4. Slide 6: what happens next.
  5. Slide 7: the question.

How carouselgen helps

carouselgen does the conversion in your browser, tells you on the file's own chip if it is empty, too big or unreadable, and designs the slides from the text. It does not post anything. If a line comes out wrong, edit the slide text by hand. If your Word file started life in Google Docs, see Google Doc to LinkedIn carousel, and for a long article, blog post to LinkedIn carousel.

Questions

Does the whole Word file get uploaded?+

No. Your browser turns the .docx into plain text and only that text goes to the server, under the file's name. The server code states that no Word archive is unpacked there.

What happens to tables and images in a Word document?+

A table's words arrive as separate lines with no grid, and images arrive as nothing. Put the values and picture instructions in the brief, or use a PDF copy.

Does carouselgen read tracked changes in a .docx?+

In a test, text inside a tracked insertion came through and text inside a tracked deletion did not. That reads as if every change had been accepted.

Can I use an old .doc file?+

No, only .docx is accepted. Open the file in Word and save it as .docx or as a PDF, then attach that.
