In short
The short answer is 8 to 10, and the honest answer is that nobody has proof of an ideal number. Here is what is known, what is vendor data, and how to decide for your own audience.
What the platforms allow
- LinkedIn: a document can have up to 300 pages and 100 MB, per LinkedIn's help page.
- Instagram: vendor guides report that the limit was raised from 10 to 20 slides in 2024. Check the app if you plan a long one.
What one benchmark found
Creator analysed more than 8,400 B2B document posts on LinkedIn. Carousels of 9 to 12 slides had a 5.4% average engagement, against 3.6% for 16 or more. This is one vendor's data on its own users' posts, so treat it as a hint, not a law.
A rule of thumb
- Write down your points. If you have three, make three content slides plus a cover and a close.
- Cut any slide that does not carry its own point. Filler slides, such as an agenda or a thank-you, are the first to go.
- Start at 8 to 10 slides in total, counting the cover and the last slide.
- Go longer only when the content is a real list, such as 15 tips. Then make it easy to skim.
- Compare your own posts: look at how many people reach the last slide on a short and a long one.
How carouselgen helps
The "8 to 10 slides" tip in the prompt box tells the designer to cut the weakest points instead of adding slides, and it is on by default. Without it, the slide count follows your content and your brief. To drop a slide later, see deleting a slide.
Questions
Is there a minimum number of slides?
A carousel is a sequence, so give it a reason to swipe: at least a cover, a few points and a close. If you only have one idea, a single image post is the better format.
Do more slides mean more reach?
Not in the benchmark above: the 16-slide-plus group did worse than the 9 to 12 group. The data is from one vendor.
Do the cover and last slide count?
Yes. 8 to 10 in total includes both.
